Recommendation: Linux/Unix Command Line course at Memrise

linuxunixcommandline

This course is created shamgar and it is an introduction course to the basics Command Line and consists of 7 levels. If you are new to Linux or decided to finally sit down and master that scary beast( photo bloos.gif) called CLI, I would highly recommend to do his course first. To be fair, I consider this course a warm up course to the more advanced and sometimes abstract Shell-Fu course.

I know that the best way of learning CLI is buy actually using the Command Line, but I also believe having the basics ingrained in your brain will go a long way photo nodding.gif If you are studying for Linux Essentials or LPIC-1, I highly recommend to go through the Linux/UNIX Command Line course first. It will only take an hour or two to get through it, but you will benefit so much from finishing this small course first!

In matter of fact, I see the Linux/UNIX Command Line course as necessary additional practice in order to pass the basic Linux exams. Take a look:

Also shamgar’s explanation of grep, pipe and pwd made me finally understand those commands photo worshippy.gif ( Avid readers of this blog, know this is not my first basic command line course photo emo.gif)

There are two minor things that I would like see differently though, first of all this Ruby specific command “tail -f log/development.log” seems to be out of place in this course photo confused.gif The second thing is I would have liked if there was a level or section where you can learn/practice things about  “man”  and “info“.

Other then those two things,  this is a great course and most definitely a must do for Linux beginners!

Recommendation: Shell Fu and Git at memrise

As you know I’ve followed some basic command line courses not were they only basic, the commands never stuck in my brain null

Memrise has an excellent command line course called Shell Fu created by Adam Chainz, who is also a web developer at memrise. This course not only learns you the command line but it also, as the name of the site already indicates null helps you memorizing the commands.

The other course I highly recommend is the Git course, created by shamgar. In case you wonder what Git is, wikipedia explains it rather well:

In software development, Git (/ɡɪt/) is a distributed revision control and source code management (SCM) system with an emphasis on speed.Initially designed and developed by Linus Torvalds for Linux kernel development, Git has since been adopted by many other projects.

Every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server.

So if you have ambitions in programming, learning Git is a must null

But the course I am totally smitten with at memrise is, the prime factorization course null I joined memrise at the 29th of April to do the Shell Fu course, which I still do daily btw. Yet I control the leadersboards at memrise when it comes to prime factorization null

What can I say, I just love to break numbers into primes null
